Design Challenge: Playground Power! How might we design playground elements that will teach kids about energy and health ?
The Swing Pump was created to help kids in places where getting water for the family is a critical task. We decided to let the swing do the real work. So, while kids are swinging and talking with friends, they can also gather the water they need for cooking and sanitation.

Design Challenge: How might we create a permanent recycling system at NNHS. (GNRG year 3)
This semester's challenge will present mechanical, political, social, architectural, and economic obstacles. Stay tuned for updates as the design challenge gets underway. Students are in the design mode and using IDEO's guide to Design Thinking every step of the way. Students are also focusing on "The Fun Theory" as a catalyst for the cultural changes that are needed. We framed the challenge with "Ignite the Recycling Revolution" knowing that the complexities of such a design will be, at times, daunting.

Design Challenge: How might we create a green solution to all of the school's mobile device recharging needs. (GNRG year 2)
Julia C. and her team creating portable and scalable window solar panel battery charging stations. They began testing various solar cells, electrical output and the electrical demands of various mobile devices. Then the team proto-typed a model and drafted the blueprints. A working proto-type will be installed in the library this fall (2011).

Design Challenge: How to repurpose a reusable bag that was once a plastic bottle. (GNRG Year 2)
Whole Foods Markets asked the Greengineers to create something new from something old. They wanted us to give a third life to their reusable "better bags" that started life as a plastic water bottle. All of the Greengineers jumped in to tackle this challenge, the design process and creativity were amazing.

So the Greengineering cohort was divided into four teams and began working on researching, designing, and building the best biodiesel reactor.
